Visual Story Telling with David Costello

Ages 10 & up. It’s been my experience that kids are well versed in - and very interested in the idea of telling stories with pictures.  In this class we’ll look at the best ways to do it.  We’ll look at the emotional language of 2-D, abstract forms (e.g. horizontal lines evoke a feeling of stability, diagonal lines evoke a feeling of motion).  Drawing on the work of Molly Bang (Picture This!) and Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics) we’ll break down the elements of representing the passage of time with a sequence of pictures.  We’ll also look at how a sequence of pictures can produce a strong emotional response from the viewer.  Each student will work individually and collaboratively.  Some principles of basic drawing will be discussed in the process. $114 registration fee; $10 materials fee.
